Runes were used during the Middle Ages across the Scandinavian Peninsula and the British Isles to write North Germanic languages. The script that flourished between the 2nd and 8th centuries has been reconstructed by modern linguists, and this script is called Elder Futhark.

The script used in Elder Futhark evolved into Younger Futhark on the Scandinavian Peninsula between the 8th and 11th centuries. Younger Futhark further evolved into Danish Futhark, Swedish-Norwegian Runes, and other scripts. Meanwhile, North Germanic people who migrated to the British Isles in the 4th century evolved Elder Futhark into Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.

Due to the extremely complex development of runes, shapes, pronunciations, and meanings vary by region. This set of rune cards primarily uses contemporary mainstream character forms without modification. There are a total of 25 cards; blank runes can have their meanings defined by the user or remain unused.

The word "rune" means "secret" and "mystery." It is said that in Norse mythology, Odin, the King of the Gods, sacrificed his right eye to drink from the Well of Wisdom, inserted a branch of Yggdrasil into his abdomen, and hung himself on Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights before comprehending the runic script, thereby gaining endless wisdom and power. Therefore, people believe that runes can predict the future and help avoid misfortune while attracting good fortune.

Before Latin script spread throughout Europe, runes were the most widely used symbols in Europe. They were carved onto jewelry, utensils, statues, weapons, and tombstones to alter fate, serve as amulets, commemorate someone or an event. Weapons used in war were also engraved with runes; people hoped to receive blessings and protection through this method.

At the end of the 19th century, individuals began using drawing methods to interpret their meanings, transforming runes into divination tools. By the 20th century, rune scholars developed a philosophical system, and runes were gradually applied to prayers and magic, at which point they came to be known as Rune Symbols.
